Another "not dead" update [13 May 2009|09:05pm]
No, I haven't forgotten you, three people who still follow me on LJ. I just haven't had anything to say.

"Irish Ned" has reached a dead end, with one final post left to be written once I confirm a couple of things -- short answer: 100 years ago somebody fibbed to the Rev. Samuel Fea.

Voice acting: when I have a new release, I'll post it here. There are about five shows in various stages of production, but releases are still a ways off (if ever). I'll start posting TamLynn pointers, even though I'm just the announcer.

If you want more current updates, I'm on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/gumprich, and on Facebook under my name (won't link because Facebook is bad with links, but how many people with my name are you going to find there? I'll tell you -- one!). Feel free to follow or friend or whatever it is you kids do on these new social networking sites.

By the way, in case you're reading this to find out if I'm still reading you, the answer is "maybe". I'm following a number of you via RSS feeds, because it's a hell of a lot easier than using the unwieldly LJ friends listing.

A question [23 Mar 2009|11:42am]
Can anyone tell me how much DC's new "Wednesday Comics" series will cost? A quick search of the usual suspects turned up nothing.

Let's Talk Comics [11 Mar 2009|08:29am]
This is the most exciting news I've heard this year, as far as the world of comic publishing is concerned.

Fantagraphics will be publishing the translated works of legendary French cartoonist Jacques Tardi. I've read exactly two translated Tardi works (iBooks' reprint of "Bloody Streets of Paris", and a story in RAW v2n2), and they blew me away. I'll be first in line for these new prints, and I recommend them unreservedly to fans of hard-boiled fiction.

It's been a very long time since any announcement excited me to this degree.

Irish Ned - scan of original book [27 Feb 2009|11:48am]
The Internet Archive has a scan of the original book here.

What I learned -- the 1910 publication date is confirmed by the original text. It's the ONLY date I'm sure of in this whole thing.

Who was Irish Ned? [20 Feb 2009|08:37pm]
More research notes regarding the search for Irish Ned

Looked through the complete burial listings for Brookside Cemetery, where Ned was buried. Pulled out all of the 1908 and 1909 dated burials, scanning each for a name that resembles "Ned," such as Edward, Edmund, or Edgar, finding 12 names.

Brookside records only had date of death (and burial), no age information, so I cross-referenced the twelve names with the Vital Statistics database search, and learned two things:

1. The VS database is not complete, as five of the 12 had no records found.
2. The other seven were eliminated, as their ages-at-death were not close to Ned.

The five possibilities:
Forsciett, Robert Ed (7/16/1908)
Garne, Ed Carl (12/7/1908)
Moeu, Edgard (5/7/1908)
Seraggo, Edwin J. (12/28/1908)
Wollett, Ed (1/3/1909)

Personally, I don't like any of these. My impression was that Ned died in late fall (which is why I searched '08 and '09, but not '10). Maybe I need to go back and search for 1910.

Or maybe his name wasn't even an "Ed", in which case I'm right back where I started.

If I could get the names attached to the Typhoid death list, my search will be narrowed down that much more...

Who were you???

1906 streetcar strike [13 Feb 2009|08:40am]
"1906 was a big year in Winnipeg's transportation history. It marked the first transportation strike. On March 30, 12,000 people gathered along Main Street as violence and disorder heralded the beginning of the strike. Two street cars were set on fire; one at Ashdown's Store and one near the C.P.R. subway. The men wanted an increase in pay and the general public sided with the men. The Company brought in strikebreakers from the U.S.A. and housed them at the Seymour Hotel.

On March 31, an Infantry Unit with a machine gun took up stations at Henry and Main. The N.W.M.P. under Lt. Col. Cameron loaded their rifles with ball cartridge. Mayor Sharpe read the Riot Act. There was some rioting and a police sergeant was hit over the head with a beer bottle. However, the crowd dispersed before the troops or N.W.M.P. charged. Eight days later, the Company granted a small increase in wages and the strike ended."

(from http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/transactions/3/transportation.shtml)

During this strike, Irish Ned's father was arrested and later sent to Stony Mountain for a long stretch. Ned was said to be "around five" when this happened, placing his year of birth 1900-1901.

Vital Stats death search has so far come up empty.

Coming soon... [12 Feb 2009|10:54am]
And now for something completely different, something that will probably be of interest only to me (but I've never let that stop me before).

Irish Ned - The Winnipeg Newsy

Found this biography while browsing Gutenberg. Published in 1910, written by The Rev. Samuel Fea, the too-short life story of a young Winnipeg newsboy.

Who was Irish Ned? What made him so compelling that Fea felt it necessary to write his biography? Is there more to his story? Naturally, obvious Internet searches bring up little on the life story of a nine year-old Canadian who died a hundred years ago. Further research is needed, and what I find will be documented here.

Someone thought this boy's life was important enough to document it. I want to know why.

Scripts & Scruples debut up! [10 Feb 2009|03:02pm]
Haven't had a chance to listen to it myself, but my first episode of Scripts & Scruples went up today -- episode 879.

The episode can be grabbed from the current link (unless you're reading this months from now, in which case you'll have to dig a bit), but I prefer to offer you this link here because it mentions me by name...

Family urgencies have taken my attention away from my newly-revived LiveJournalness, but to quickly update the last message that nobody read: I'm not sure when my first episode of Scripts & Scruples will drop. It will be episode #880, I know that much.

Casting announcement [30 Jan 2009|12:28pm]
[ mood | excited ]

I don't usually make casting announcements here. Productions are usually cast months in advance, some never come to fruition, and sometimes the final production is released without me. That's why I tend to announce releases, and not "possibilities." But in this case, I'm making an exception.

As you can see in a little "News" blurb here, I have joined the cast of the long-running (since 2004) Radio Loger soap opera "Scripts and Scruples". I'm playing Curt, a mysterious and ominous character from Casey's past, who has come to New York looking to take back what's his.

I'm really excited to be a part of this show. This role is unlike any I've played before, and the possibilities are great.

My first episode is #880, which should be released next Tuesday (#876 was released last night). Naturally, a link will be posted here, now that I have consistent access again.

If so, new casting announcement coming later today.

If not, well, nobody can see this anyway.
